Small Company Workers are Losing the Race to Retirement

NEW YORK (MainStreet) — Working for a small business may reduce your retirement readiness. A newly-released Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies survey finds that the estimated median household retirement savings among Baby Boomers is lower among small company workers ($92,000) compared to large company workers ($113,000). And while 88% of small company workers think company-sponsored retirement plans are an important benefit, only 58% are offered such a plan by their employers.

Congress Nears Deal on Student Loan Rates. Spoiler Alert: They’re Going Up

In a moment of rare bipartisan collaboration, the Senate hammered out an agreement last week to keep rates on some new student loans from doubling, and it’s expected that a final version will be signed into law before the new academic year starts. It’s welcome progress, but here’s the rub: The compromise pretty much guarantees that rates will go up in the future

Declare Independence From Your Student Loans

When it comes to declaring independence from debt, a lot of us are under the thumb of the same dictator: student loans. In fact, according to a recent report from the Urban Institute, one in five adults over the age of 20 are carrying student loan debt -- and more than half of them are worried about how they're going to pay it off.

Most advice on student loan debt focuses on how to avoid getting mired in it in the first place. For people in college, those tips can be very useful -- after all, it's worthwhile to know that the road to riches isn't paved with psychology degrees, and that private loans are fiscal vampires that will suck the money from your wallet and the joy from your soul. But once you're out of college, the die has been cast, the debt has been accumulated, and the checks start coming due.

    Mortgage Refinance Taxing With 401(k)

    Dear Dr. Don,
I have a rather convoluted question or rather several questions that branch out from one question. We have a mortgage with a loan balance of $245,000 on a home valued at $265,000 resulting in a monthly private mortgage insurance, or PMI, of $130. Our mortgage annual percentage rate, or APR, is 6.87%. We have $40,000 in a 401(k) account.
Would it behoove us to withdraw the 401(k

The New (Old) Family Doctor: Cheaper, Better Care Without Insurance

In old movies and TV shows, medical care always seems like a simple thing. When Beaver Cleaver or Jem Finch is sick or injured, the kindly neighborhood doctor shows up, fixes everything, and gives the parents a bill. Payment usually occurs off screen, but the medical expenses never seem especially onerous: the "Beaver's Tonsils" episode of Leave it to Beaver doesn't finish with Mr. Cleaver telling his son to hold on for a month until finances are better. And the broken arm scene in To Kill a Mockingbird doesn't end with Atticus telling Jem to man up until they can make it to the free clinic. Instead, the process is simple: injury, treatment, payment, healing.

How College Grads Can Improve Money Management Skills

They might have an undergraduate degree under their belts, but recent graduates are entering the real world lacking sufficient knowledge and education when it comes to money management.
According to a recent report by Finra’s Investor Education Foundation, 19% of Americans still spend more than they earn and 56% said they do not have "rainy day" funds that cover three months of expenses. What’s more, the report cites that a lack of financial education — mostly among younger workers in certain states — is the main reason many Americans have little in savings.

    Fix costly credit report errors

     http://money.cnn.com/2013/06/01/pf/credit-report.moneymag/index.html?iid=SF_PF_LN

You may be doing everything right: keeping your card balances well below their limits, always paying bills on time, and watching how often you apply for new loans. Yet you might have a lower credit rating than you deserve.
A recent study by the Federal Trade Commission found that one in 20 consumers could have a meaningful error in a credit report.

These are mistakes that, when fixed, could cause at least a 25-point increase in your score, enough to qualify you for a lower interest rate. "For something so important, this rate of error is too high," says Chi Chi Wu, a staff attorney at the National Consumer Law Center.

Underwater homeowners find they've become accidental landlords

A Sale Pending sign is seen in front of a home on April 29, 2013 in Miami, Florida.
Maria Wells said she never intended to be a landlord. She sells real estate; she doesn't invest in it. Now the Florida resident owns two properties. One was her son's, but he had to move to take a new job.
The other was hers, but she got married and moved in with her husband. She can't sell either because she is underwater on both mortgages, so she rents them. Maria is one of a growing cadre of what the Realtors have dubbed, "Accidental Landlords

    http://www.learnvest.com/2013/05/6-money-leaks-that-are-draining-your-finances/

Like a leaky faucet loses water, too many of us let money slip away in unseen fees, charges and general overpayments.
As long as finding and fixing each leak doesn't require more effort than it's worth, you're doing yourself a favor by breaking out the proverbial wrench. If you can find just six ways to save $10 every month, at the end of the year you've got an extra $720 in the bank.
Keeping that in mind, could you be leaking money in one of these ways? Read on to find out.

This Housing Upturn Looks Like the Real Thing

    http://business.time.com/2013/05/15/why-this-housing-upturn-looks-like-the-real-thing/?iid=biz-main-belt

Ever since the recovery began in 2009, a weak housing market has held back the U.S. economy. The first rebound in home prices was lackluster and after only a year was followed by another dip. But the recent upturn in home prices looks like the real thing. One clear sign of a turning point: In March, homeownership hit a 17-year low, while the 12-month gain in home prices was the biggest in seven years. Those two extremes suggest that the market has hit bottom. The people who are least well financed have been squeezed out, while demand is growing among people who can afford to pay higher home prices. If that trend continues – and there are good reasons to believe it will – a substantial burden will be lifted from the U.S. economy.

A Debt Payment Plan That'll Boost Your Credit

    http://www.foxbusiness.com/personal-finance/2013/05/20/debt-payment-plan-thatll-boost-your-credit/

    Dear Debt Adviser,
I'd like to pay off about $5,000 in credit card debt over the next one to two years. This is an old debt, and I will not be incurring other charges in that time. I have recently received offers for a zero percent credit card balance transfer as well as a personal loan from my bank at 10% interest. The bank loan is a fixed rate, and the credit card interest would increase to about 18% at the end of 12 months. I have done the math, and it would cost about the same to use either the balance transfer or bank loan to pay off this debt. However, I hope to begin shopping for my first home once this is paid off, and I am wondering which of these options would be a better choice for improving my credit score.

Credit Unions vs. Banks: Which One Should You Pick?

    http://www.savvysugar.com/Should-You-Pick-Credit-Union-Bank-30195781

You should go with a credit union if:
    • You want your say. A credit union is a nonprofit, membership-run financial institution. This means that when you become a member, you own part of the bank. Once you join, you automatically get voting privileges to elect the board of directors. So in a sense, if you don't like their management, you can vote them out.
    • You want better service. Because of this member-run and voting system, credit union members tend to be more satisfied with the customer service than customers of big banks.

    What Is Net Worth?

    http://www.dailyfinance.com/2013/04/05/net-worth-definition/

April is Financial Literacy Month, and our goal is to help you raise your money IQ. In this series, we'll tackle key economic concepts -- ones that affect your everyday finances and investments -- to help you make smarter choices with every dollar decision you face.

In a nutshell, net worth is what you get when you subtract liabilities from assets -- what you owe from what you own. Like many economic and financial terms, net worth can apply in a variety of situations.

Obama Administration Shortens Health Insurance Form

    http://www.foxbusiness.com/personal-finance/2013/04/30/obama-administration-shortens-health-insurance-form/

Consumers still confused over the health insurance benefits under the new federal health care overhaul got a little help from the White House Tuesday.
The Obama Administration shared a three-page short form for single insurance applicants to fill out under the Affordable Care Act.
The simplified application is shorter than industry standards and was created after the public gave feedback that the original 21-page draft application was too long and complex, a senior administration official told FOX News the move.

What Happens When You Don't File Your Taxes

    http://www.dailyfinance.com/2013/04/17/what-happens-when-you-dont-file-your-taxes/

    By Mandi Woodruff

What actually happens to Americans who either forget or flat out refuse to file their taxes?

The simple answer is that it's nothing good. In fact, after doing some digging, we're pretty sure you'd be better off filling out your tax forms in crayon than sitting on your hands and letting the IRS have at you.

"There's simply no hiding from the IRS," says Odysseas Papadimitriou, CEO of Cardhub.com. "Level with yourself as well as the IRS about your ability to pay, pick a payment option that makes the most sense, and make sure to honor the terms of your agreement."
