Why a Settled Debt is Still 'Past Due'

http://www.foxbusiness.com/personal-finance/2013/04/22/why-settled-debt-is-still-past-due/

In the aftermath of my divorce and unemployment in 2009, I was unable to keep up with payments on about $9,000 of credit card debt. Eventually, I settled for about $4,500. Now, when I look at my credit report, the account is shown as closed, and that I settled the account for less than the full amount. But, it's also flagged as more than 120 days past due. What should I do?

Is ‘Owning Old’ Right for You?

    http://www.foxbusiness.com/personal-finance/2013/04/22/is-owning-old-right-for/

“They just don’t make ‘em like they used to.”
We’re all familiar with this phrase, often uttered by people lamenting the lack of quality and durability of new things, whether it be a car, a set of tools, a kitchen appliance or even a home.
When it comes to homes that are more than 50 years old, this phrase has a double meaning, which could be good or bad — depending on what’s important to you.
A client recently closed on an adorable bungalow built in the 1920s in the heart of Fort Lauderdale. In South Florida, it doesn’t get much older than that.

Co-working Spaces Could Save You a Bundle

    http://business.time.com/2013/03/28/co-working-spaces-could-save-you-a-bundle/

Renting a co-working space can be a great way to launch your startup cheaply – and expand your professional network in the process.

For starters, it’s much easier to deduct than the complicated “home office deduction” – and much less likely to trigger an audit. It’s also a lot less complicated than home-based business laws and regulations, particularly if you have any employees.
Shared expenses make co-working much cheaper than leasing an office by yourself, and the shared arrangement means you only have one bill to pay each month. It’s also much easier to get out of than a long-term lease, and a shared conference room looks a lot more professional than having clients visit your basement.

Why We’re So Irrational When It Comes to Tax RefundsThink about it:

    http://business.time.com/2013/03/18/why-were-so-irrational-when-it-comes-to-tax-refunds/

A tax refund is just that — a refund of your own hard-earned money. It’s not a gift or a stroke of good fortune. The problem is that most people don’t look at tax refunds this way.

Most Americans—a full 75%—receive refunds after filing their taxes. In other words, most Americans have too much money withheld from their paychecks. More than half of Americans—58%, to be exact—say they intentionally plan to receive a refund each year. Understandably, people do so to avoid an unexpected tax payment come April 15, with the idea that it’s better to withhold a bit more to be on the safe side. But the average tax refund will be over $2,800 this year — well beyond “a bit more.”

Florida, Nevada and Illinois led the nation in March with the highest foreclosure rates for the first quarter, while foreclosures nationally dropped to the lowest point since 2007, before the hopusing market meltdown, according to data from real estate market analyst Realty Trac and the first quarter U.S. Market Report.

Florida had the most March foreclosures of any state-one in every 104 housing units, or nearly three times the national average, ABC News reports.
Foreclosure starts across the United States increased 2 percent from February to March, the second straight monthly increase following three consecutive monthly decreases, the Realty Trac numbers indicated.

Lower employment rates coupled with skyrocketing premiums have left fewer Californians with company-provided health insurance than there were a decade ago, the Associated Press is reporting.

A new report by health care analyst Robert Wood Johnson Foundation says that the number of Californians receiving employer-sponsored insurance dropped by 1.3 million, or 8.4 percent, since the early 2000s.
An estimated 18.9 million people, which covered 62 percent of the state's non-elderly population, had employer-sponsored health insurance in 2000.

But, according to data from the State Health Access Data Assistance Center, an independent health policy research center at the University of Minnesota, by 2011 the number of Californians insured through their employers had decreased to 17.6 million, or 53 percent of California's non-elderly population.

How to Tame Health-Care Costs in Retirement

Do you worry about your health care costs after you retire?
    You should.
Americans' out-of-pocket medical spending in retirement can vary widely, but generally the numbers are big-and they have gotten a lot bigger over the past several years.
"Even though most American retirees benefit from Medicare coverage, a mounting body of research predicts that many will face large and increasing out-of-pocket expenditures for healthcare costs in retirement and that many already struggle to finance these costs," according to a recent study of consumer health care spending expectations in the American Journal of Law & Medicine.

Student Loan Borrowers Leaving Lots of Money on the Table

"I'm still trying to get my head around some concepts that I heard today," said Rep. Raúl Grijalva (D-Ariz.), a member of the House Workforce and Education Committee, "that irrespective of the amount of money you borrow or the interest rate, that you'll still end up paying the same amount."
"Wow, somehow that doesn't seem possible," said Republican Rep. John Kline of Minnesota, the committee chairman.
The committee members were responding to testimony given last month by Jason Delisle at a March 13 congressional hearing in which Delisle spoke about the Department of Education's income-based student loan repayment (IBR) program.
But Grijalva and Kline aren't the only ones unaware of the benefits of IBR. As it turns out, they are in the majority, a fact that prompted the White House to issue a 2012 statement concluding that "Too few responsible borrowers are aware of their repayment options."

With Positions to Fill, Employers Wait for Perfection

Daniel Rosenbaum for The New York Times

Paul Sullivan, a video editor, has been invited for numerous interviews from the same company, but has not been offered the job.

American employers have a variety of job vacancies, piles of cash and countless well-qualified candidates. But despite a slowly improving economy, many companies remain reluctant to actually hire, stringing job applicants along for weeks or months before they make a decision.

Choosing a Credit Card Processor (and Drawing Some Conclusions)

    http://boss.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/03/29/my-search-for-a-credit-card-processor-part-4/?ref=smallbusiness

My search for a credit card processor started last April and dragged on through the end of January. Like many small-business owners, I have plenty of things to keep me busy, so my search was an on again/off again thing. As it progressed, I found that the more carefully I looked at the terms I was agreeing to, the less I liked them.

13 Ways to Get Free Books

    http://www.savvysugar.com/Where-Get-Free-eBooks-Audio-Books-Books-30118371

Are books one of your biggest spending vices? You may think that great literature is worth any price, but buying books here and there can quickly add up. If you're a voracious reader, try to save money by getting some of your books for free through these means:

1 in 4 Teens Plans to Rely Financially on Parents Until Age 27

    http://www.dailyfinance.com/2013/03/31/teens-financial-literacy-parents/

April is Financial Literacy month, which is the personal finance industry's cue to ramp up its message that high school -- and the home -- is ground zero for the movement. After all, if we can teach teens to handle money responsibly, we can ensure that the next generation of adults won't make a mess of things. Right?

Unfortunately, teens don't have quite as much faith in their own financial futures as most people, according to a new survey.

Cut my Payment Without Extending Car-Loan Term?

    http://www.foxbusiness.com/personal-finance/2013/04/12/cut-my-payment-without-extending-car-loan-term/

    Dear Driving for Dollars,
Is it possible to lower my monthly car payment without extending the terms? I have good credit.
    -- Pat

    Dear Pat,
It is possible to lower your monthly car payment by refinancing the car loan. Refinance rates have dropped quite a bit over the last six months. The national average was recently 2.44% for a 36-month loan, so chances are good that you could lower your interest rate, assuming you've had your car loan for a while.

When can an Issuer Close Your Credit Card Account?

    http://www.foxbusiness.com/personal-finance/2013/04/05/when-can-issuer-close-your-credit-card-account/

Maybe you've experienced this before: You get to the cash register, pull out your credit card, swipe it and are told it's declined. You try again. Same result. So you call the issuer and find out the account has been closed, despite the fact that you've never been late with a payment. "What even?"
If you're confused, you're not alone. This kind of thing happens -- and it's perfectly legal.
New regulations do nothing to help in this situation. The Credit CARD Act of 2009 helped to increase protection against interest rate hikes and overlimit fees. But credit cancellation policies remain largely unchanged.

ATM Viruses Are Out to Steal Your Cash

    http://www.dailyfinance.com/2013/04/01/atm-virus-cybercrime-identity-theft/
These days, consumers are often on the lookout for identity theft scams that may end up compromising many aspects of their finances, but now criminals are doing even more to rip them off, including targeting their banks with malicious software.

A new type of malware that targets point-of-sale systems and ATM card readers known as "Dump Memory Grabber" scans those devices for payment card data and is beginning to infect a large number of the nation's largest banks, according to a report from SecurityWeek.

Health Law Provision for Small Business Is Delayed

WASHINGTON — Unable to meet tight deadlines in the new health care law, the Obama administration is delaying parts of a program intended to provide affordable health insurance to small businesses and their employees — a major selling point for the health care legislation.

The law calls for a new insurance marketplace specifically for small businesses, starting next year. But in most states, employers will not be able to get what Congress intended: the option to provide workers with a choice of health plans. They will instead be limited to a single plan.

    How to Calculate Gross Profit

One of the most important financial concepts you will need to learn in running your new business is the computation of gross profit. And the tool that you use to maintain gross profit is markup.
The gross profit on a product is computed as:
Sales - Cost of Goods Sold = Gross Profit
To understand gross profit, it is important to know the distinction between variable and fixed costs.

Your employer may cost you $100k in retirement savings

    http://money.cnn.com/2013/03/27/retirement/401k-fees/index.html?iid=SF_PF_LN

Some U.S. workers are losing out on more than $100,000 in retirement savings thanks to 401(k) fees.

The company an employee works for makes all the difference. Over the course of a 40-year career, workers at some companies lose tens of thousands of dollars in 401(k) fees and earnings -- sometimes more than double the savings .

The $600 Billion the IRS Can’t Collect

Although you wouldn’t know it by the weather, April is fast approaching. And that means in the coming weeks, millions of Americans will be breaking out their W-2s and their favorite tax software to figure out exactly how much money they owe their government. Of course, in an economy as large and complex as America’s there are plenty of folks who don’t pay exactly what they owe.

Home Price Gains Continue Increasing Nationwide

    http://business.time.com/2013/03/26/home-price-gains-continue-increasing-nationwide/

Citing “steady employment and low borrowing rates” as well as inventories that have fallen “to their lowest post-recession levels,” the S&P Dow Jones Indices released Case-Shiller housing data that showed home prices jumping 8.1% from the previous year. When charted, the data looks like it’s been hit with a booster rocket, with the past three months’ reports showing solid year-over-year gains of 5.5%, 6.8%, and the just-reported 8.1%.

Why Banks Love Debit Cards Again

    http://business.time.com/2013/03/28/why-banks-love-debit-cards-again/?iid=biz-main-lead

Debit cards were supposed to be toast. The industry started writing their obituary when financial reform targeted overdraft fees and interchange or “swipe” fees, which had made debit cards extremely lucrative for banks. So why is it that banks are now pushing debit cards like never before?
A couple years ago, the banking industry warned federal regulators that reform efforts could lead to both an increase in fees and a decrease in debit card usage. “Banks and credit unions could charge for various debit card‐related products and services that are now offered free of charge, such as free debit cards and free debit card transactions,” a consortium of financial industry executives wrote in a 2011 letter to the Federal Reserve arguing against reform.

Housing Foreclosures Start to 'Flare-Up' Again

Banks are repossessing fewer homes, in fact the fewest since March of 2007, but in some states that may be about to change, according to a new report from RealtyTrac, an online foreclosure data and sale firm.
Bank repossessions, the final stage of the foreclosure process are down 29 percent from a year ago, but foreclosure starts, which are the first stage of the process, jumped 10 percent in February from the previous month. This after falling for three consecutive months.

Pushing Back Retirement, and Not Always for Money

    http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/13/business/retirementspecial/pushing-back-retirement-and-not-always-for-money.html?_r=0

Nowadays retirement is all over the map. It’s blurred, more elastic. Many people retire piecemeal. Or they retire and then unretire. Or they continue working well after they were supposed to have retired.
As part of a fast-changing retirement picture, many Americans leave their longtime job, but then, fearing that their Social Security benefits and nest egg will prove too small, plunge into part-time work — as a consultant, say, or a salesclerk at a big-box store. Others step down from career jobs but then conclude, after a year or two, that they are bored and want to start their own businesses. So they unretire and become entrepreneurs.
Not long ago, it seems, the typical American’s goal was to retire at 58, 60, 62 — certainly no later than 65. But now, more workers are pushing back retirement to 68, 70, 72 and even later.

Forced Arbitration: Killing the Right to Sue Big Companies, One TOS Agreement at a Time

    http://www.dailyfinance.com/on/forced-arbitration-killing-class-action-lawsuits-tos-agreements/

To celebrate National Consumer Protection Week, we recently highlighted a few quick actions that consumers can take to protect themselves. But the sad fact is that the most potent consumer protection tool may soon be all but extinct.

We're referring to the class-action lawsuit, which for decades has allowed groups of wronged Americans to band together, pool their resources and take on companies ranging from Exxon Mobil to Toyota. But many companies are now preemptively ducking such lawsuits by getting consumers to sign away their right to file them.

So-called forced arbitration clauses say that in the event of a dispute, you won't be able to file a class-action suit. Instead, your dispute will be settled one-on-one in a private arbitration forum. These clauses are commonly inserted into terms of service agreements, which you must agree to if you want to use the product or service.

How to talk to your aging parents about moneythink your parents' intelligence is diminished.

    http://money.cnn.com/2013/04/01/retirement/parents-money.moneymag/index.html?iid=SF_PF_Lead

Time to discuss if they need help with their finances. Proceed carefully because they may not see things as you do: A 2012 Fidelity study found that while 24% of adult children think their parents will need a hand with money, 97% of the parents do not.

"Conversations about money with your elderly parents are really about control -- something they don't want to lose," says David Solie, author of How to Say It to Seniors. Try these tips.
    THE GROUND RULES
Drop the attitude. An I-know-better air will put their backs up. Take care your concern doesn't come across as if you think their intelligence is diminished, says Solie.
Avoid saying "you should..." Those two little words are sure to put them on the defensive.
Bring in a third party. To your mom and dad, you will always be a kid -- which is why the talk may go better if you deliver it alongside an outside expert, says Paula Span, author of When the Time Comes.

5 Ways Consumers Can Protect Themselves in 5 Minutes

    http://www.dailyfinance.com/2013/03/06/consumer-protection-week-tips-advice/

This week is Consumer Protection Week, when a group of nonprofits and government agencies come together to highlight critical issues ranging from identity theft to dodgy debt collector practices.

Most consumer protection tips tend to be reactive -- telling you how to spot a scam email, for instance, or respond to a collections call. But there are also certain proactive steps you can take right now to head off fraud and financial screw-ups before they even take place.

Here are five actions you can take to protect yourself as a consumer, all of which should take less than five minutes to complete.

    1. Turn on Two-Step Verification on Your Email

Security experts will tell you that you should have a different password for every online account you open. But anyone who uses the Internet on a regular basis knows that this is virtually impossible -- you likely have dozens of accounts ranging from bank accounts to email to social media to news sites, and you access them on multiple devices.
