Small Company Workers are Losing the Race to Retirement

NEW YORK (MainStreet) — Working for a small business may reduce your retirement readiness. A newly-released Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies survey finds that the estimated median household retirement savings among Baby Boomers is lower among small company workers ($92,000) compared to large company workers ($113,000). And while 88% of small company workers think company-sponsored retirement plans are an important benefit, only 58% are offered such a plan by their employers.

How College Grads Can Improve Money Management Skills

According to a recent report by Finra’s Investor Education Foundation

, 19% of Americans still spend more than they earn and 56% said they do not have "rainy day" funds that cover three months of expenses. A recent study by the Federal Trade Commission found that one in 20 consumers could have a meaningful error in a credit report.

These are mistakes that, when fixed, could cause at least a 25-point increase in your score, enough to qualify you for a lower interest rate. "For something so important, this rate of error is too high," says Chi Chi Wu, a staff attorney at the National Consumer Law Center.

Ever since the recovery began in 2009, a weak housing market has held back the U.S. economy. The first rebound in home prices was lackluster and after only a year was followed by another dip. But the recent upturn in home prices looks like the real thing. One clear sign of a turning point: In March, homeownership hit a 17-year low, while the 12-month gain in home prices was the biggest in seven years. Those two extremes suggest that the market has hit bottom. The people who are least well financed have been squeezed out, while demand is growing among people who can afford to pay higher home prices. If that trend continues – and there are good reasons to believe it will – a substantial burden will be lifted from the U.S. economy.

Dear Debt Adviser,
I'd like to pay off about $5,000 in credit card debt over the next one to two years. This is an old debt, and I will not be incurring other charges in that time. I have recently received offers for a zero percent credit card balance transfer as well as a personal loan from my bank at 10% interest. The bank loan is a fixed rate, and the credit card interest would increase to about 18% at the end of 12 months. Payday Loans Cost Economy $1 Billion in 2011: Study

Payday loans cost the U.S. economy nearly $1 billion and thousands of jobs in 2011, according to a report from the Insight Center for Community Economic Development.
The study says that the burden of repaying the loans resulted in $774 million in lost consumer spending and 14,000 job losses. Bankruptcies related to payday loans numbered 56,230, taking an additional $169 million out of the economy

Consumers still confused over the health insurance benefits under the new federal health care overhaul got a little help from the White House Tuesday.
The Obama Administration shared a three-page short form for single insurance applicants to fill out under the Affordable Care Act.
The simplified application is shorter than industry standards and was created after the public gave feedback that the original 21-page draft application was too long and complex, a senior administration official told FOX News the move.
